For a while now, I have noticed a "bink bink bink.." noise coming from my car as it rolled, either forward or reverse, at low speeds. From the tone and location, I initially thought it was simply a pebble, or piece of crap rollling around inside a hubcap, giving the tinny noise as the wheel spun. I got the car in the air, and spun the rear end, only to discover the noise was coming from the rear of the transmission, the original iron powerglide. I pulled the drive shaft, and checked universals, finding them good and tight. I listened closer, and the noisse seems to be coming from the tailshaft area of the transmision. I disconnected the speedo drive, and removed the gear, but there was no effect on the noise. The noise occurs about, but not exactly every half turn of the driveshaft. Performance of the tranny does not seem to be affected. Any comments/ideas before I pull things apart???

I would check the fit of the splines on u-joint to tail shaft. If there is any appreciable wiggle then it likely is the problem. If tight and it slides easily in and out then it may not be the problem.

I vote for a broken flex plate or loose bolts from the torque convertor to the flex plate.

Ray may be right on this one. Both times I have had a cracked flex plate it was a click type sound. It was most noticable at low speeds and seemed to go away as speed was increased. The cracks and breaks were on the center bolts that attach the flex plate to the crankshaft.

I think I can eliminate the converter to crank connection, since the noise was evident when spinning the driveshaft with the tranny in neutral. The crank ans outer shell of the converter should not have been moving. Plus the noise is defifitly in sync with driveshaft, not motor speed. I think I have to find a good diagram of a powerglide, and figure what is spinning at about twice driveshaft speed toward the rear of the tranny. Thank you for the help, and please keep the coments coming.
PS. Any leads on a repairman for an original tube radio would be appreciated. The radio still works, but reception has definitly gotten worse over the last couple of years.

You may want to contact the chevradioman with your problem. You should see his name on several posts.

Remove and inspect the trasmission governor ...try it with the gov. removed. Also check bolts on rear pump.

Thanks for the suggestion. After reading it, and looking over a picture of the powerglide's innards, I strongly suspect the governor is the problem. I suspect my noise is from the weights flopping around at low speed. The noise seemed to be coming from right around the area of the cover over the governor. As soon as I wrap up a project on my ratty Vette, and free up my lift, I'll pull the governor and hopefully confirm the problem. Thanks again.

The noise is more or less normal. Dosen't indicate a problem. :)

When you remove the gov cover, take notice to see that the small nylon rubbing insert is in the outer end of the gov. It just snaps into the end of the gov. That could be transfering the weight dropping noise....

So, more than a year after first complaining of my annoying noise, I finally put my '55 on the lift and puled the four bolts on the governor cover, and pulled the unit out. It looks absolutely great, no wear evident, and all there as far as I can tell. However, I am sure the noise I was hearing was in fact the governor weights flopping with every revolution. Also, the low to high shift point seems to be at a bit higher than comfortable speed. I guess I am looking for advise on if this noise is common to powerglides? If not, is there something that keeps the weights from flopping? Or, is the noise and flopping weights just a symptom of another tranny problem that may be resulting in my high shift points? Thanks.

There is nothing that keep the weights from floping. Usually you can not hear them except under very "ideal" conditions. The govorner controls just the maximum up shift speed which would be 55 MPH with the stock V8 gov. To lower your up shift speed for mid range lengthen the lower rod connected to the lever on the side of the carburetor. Go about 2 turns at a time (I assume that you have an 8 Cyl. engine) The alternative would be to try a different gov.
Is the nylon thrust plug between the cover and the gov. in place?

The nylon thrust plug is in place. The car has an extremely quiet 265, and the pinging is only heard at about walking speeds, which is about the speed I pull out of the local cruise nights around here. Being the only noise from an otherwise silent car, it just grates at my nerves. Guess I'll just live with it.
