In setting the firing order: as I read on a four cylinder it should be 1,2,4,3,. Here's my question: On the distributor how do I know which wire goes to the number one plug? Is it base on the direction of the tip of the rotar???

Yes it is based upon where the rotor is when the #1 piston is up to Top Dead Center with both valves closed The distributor can then be inserted and engaged with the cam shaft gear with the rotor pointing to the number one sparkplug wire, if you are a stickler for correctness. If you don't want to pull the distributor, get #1 to top dead center , valves closed and notice where the rotor is pointed. The closest plug terminal should hold the plug wire to #1 sparkplug, then the next sparkplug hole in the direction the rotor turns will be #2 so on. Please note that the crank shaft turns two revs to the one for the rotor, so just having the #1 piston top dead center isn't enough, it could be 180 degrees off. That will be a starting place to get the engine to run so the timing can be set with a timing light.

To add to MrMacks reply an easy method to determine #1 top centre is to remove #1 spark plug place your finger over the hole and turn the motor by hand When you feel pressure on your finger the piston is rising on compression then turn until timing marks line up the rotor then points to the #1 position on cap the rest of the wires in sequence go to the respective plugs
