53 non-pressure 235. Starts great when cold. Acts like it's seized when normal operating temperature. Timing is on the ball and vacuum and centrifugal advance work. Hand cranks and bump starts OK. What's wrong?

I had the same problem with my 54. Replaced starter and all OK. You might clean in good and replace brushes. Also do you have the corect size bable? The parts book calls for an "0" gage wire.

With 6V it is cable size, cable size, cable size, 01 or 00 gage is an absolute necessity. There is increased drag with a warm engine and it will pull the starter down, increasing the need for more amperage which in turn robs the ignition. It seems that about 99% of the hard starting questions that are posted here are resolved by obtaining proper cables and cleaning all connections. talk talk talk

"glyn" is correct. Cable size is extremely important! I went with a 0000 copper welding cable on my '51 and it made a big difference.

Thanx, guys!, I always use 00 GA starter wire with 10 Ga accessory attached at battery. 12 inch Ground is connected to front of block on this car. Battery is group 2 from EV. (It will run in hybrid mode, when starter works.)
I'll try a starter from a working vehicle.
Thanx again, Lou

Well, Lou. I have a 53 210 with 6 volt system and installed cables from Tractor Supply and good starter and she starts up every time hot or cold.
Maybe you have a recent re-built engine with not enough shims.
Just a thought I have been there and done that too.

Lou; I always make sure the starter has it's own ground. I never rely on the starter being bolted to the engine for a ground.

Here is one that I had, it was the Ignition switch. Jump started the solenoid and it turned over fine, use the key start and it was like molasses in the winter. Changed the ignition and it was cured. This was after changing 3 starter and 1 set of cables.
