I RECENTLY PICKED UP TWO OVERDRIVE TRANNIES. ONE IS #3866882 WHICH IS GM WITH TOTAL LENGTH OF TWENTY AND A HALF INCHES LONG.THE OTHER IS GM #3849534 WITH A TOTAL LENGTH OF TWENTY ONE AND A HALF INCHES LONG.THIS TRANNY HAS A DATE ON THE TAIL OF 11/23/64. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHICH TRANNY TO PUT IN A 1968 CHEVY PICKUP WITH A 327 ENGINE. ALSO WOULD LOW GEAR BE SINKRONIZED IN EITHER TRANNY. THANKS

The 1965 was the last year of the non-syncronized first gear.
The 3849534 would be a 1965 transmission.
I do not have the casting number for a 1966 but if the case with the 3866882 looks like the other case its non-syncronized. The new for 1966 syncro. case will look very different.
1967 is the last year that overdrive was offered and the 1966-67's would be very rare.
I would rather have the non-syncro with O.D. than the new syncro. with no O.D.

IT'S POSSIBLE THE TRANNY NUMBER COULD BE 6866882. ALSO THE SIDE COVER HAS SEVEN BOLTS ON THIS TRANNY. THE OTHER TRANNY #3849534 HAS ONLY FOUR BOLTS ON THE SIDE COVER. THANKS DENNY

The first year OD was available in a Chevrolet (from the factory) was 1955. Some cars had it available back in 1934 (Studebaker, Chrysler and DeSoto)...but GM was hesitant to pay Warner for using it. Would have been a great asset for GM cars. Chevrolet is the only GM make that finally got it.

The all syncro trans. should have the number 3919365 stamped into the cover.
