O.K. do not rip me on such a simple thing, but I am having problems installing the skirts on the 51 Styleline. Is there a difference between left and right? Is the lock arm in front or back? They were not on when I got it, so I am looking for some help from you experts. I need to know because I have to do some finish body work on the rim of the wheel cutouts. While checking the fit, "It was almost impossible to install them." I found that one has the arm pointing to the front and the other to the back.

Check the wheel well. There should be a slot on one side of the opening and a guide on the other. There will also be a piece of metal attached to the opening that has a rather large "button hole" that accepts the latch side of the skirt. Then the question is do you have 51-52 skirts or a set of 53-54.

The 1951-52 fender skirts are interchangeable from left to right. Also, on the inside of each fender well there are two identical large vertical slots, one each on the front and the back of the well for the fender skirts to engage.

Since both fender skirts are the same, the lock arm is on the left side of each fender skirt.

Boy,now I am somewhat confused. I may have the wrong skirts. The wheel opening has two tabs going down and the skirts have two tabs going up. I can not find any slots that the skirt tabs go into or slits in the skirts. You guys have given me some help and it is appreciated. I checked the skirts and they are the same size and shape when stacked the same way. They are so tight you cannot get them completely inside the opening.

Thanks, Roger

The wheel openings on the 1951 Chevrolet do have some tabs that help to align the fender skirts when installed. However, the two vertical slotted brackets are what the fender skirts engage to hold them in place. On the right end of the skirt is a hook that engages the vertical slot on the wheel well opening. On the left side of the skirt is the lock assembly that also has a hook that engages the vertical slot on the wheel well opening.

Sounds like you might have the wrong fender skirts.

Is it possible the the wheel openings were repaired and are of the improper size?....1951-52 are the only years that the both the skirts are of the same exact shape.
and will interchane from side to side.

Chevgene, I think you may have hit on my problem. That is probably why I need to do some work on the wheel opening. Someone has repaired the opening, but very sloppy work. I think I may make a cardboard skirt and form the opeining to it.
Thanks, Roger

You will need to allow for a new skirt rubber, It may be a good idea to find a 51 in your area with good fitting skirts for a template. When I was doing body work on a 51 I used a skirt to check the work on the opening.
