47 There is a guy on Ebay from N.Y state that has W-1's on quite often. Has good feedback. Search W-1 Carter Carb. Hope this helps you out.

i have been through the same thing a few years back i had a 34 w1 rebuilt i sent it off to nc or sc i dont remember but they are out of business anyway they did a real good job of cleaning but it was still wore out when i got it back if they cant fix or replace the parts that are wore then it is not repaired and will not preform correct another thing is do they test run it on a comparable good engine . after watching chip work on the early updrafts even having all the right parts they do not run correct mostly in the idle circuit . when you get a carb that is 70 years old and been worked on by so called experts from the west coast to east its like a box of chocalates you never know what you get hope this helps

What about obsolete chevy? I've never bought a carb from them, but they have pretty quick customer service and seem to be a good place to order from?

Two thoughts Chev Gene's and 37 Blue's posts....

1. It seems likely that somebody in "our" group would have the expertise and experience to work on "our" type cars / parts. The carburetor in this case. Likely many "regular" shops / mechanics don't have the experience or knowledge to work on our older cars.

2. It also seems like a good thing to support our "own." Especially when the results are good, as noted in Blue's post.

It makes for one of those "win-win" type situations!! There's good results for the guy in need and we support our own too!!

I ordered part number 64-7072 from Autozone. It states a Holley rebuilt carb but what i received was a rebuilt Carter W-1. I also see Champion carbs on thier website as a W-! replacement.

But do you know which W-1 you have?....Chevrolet used 15 versions of a Carter W-1. There were also dozens of other versions used on other makes of cars.

Probably the simplest and readily available is the Rochester from around '52 three speed cars. Jets can be change easily and parts are available. I have one on my '48 and it works well, but I had to change the recommended jet up one size...Another carb from the past is the Carter YF replacement. I think it was a Carter 413... It was a universal carb the worked well and it was available from Wards new. One oldtimer who had a '47 in our club thought Stromberg carbs were the best. I never used one and don't remember the model number...
