Back in the late 40's ('46 to '48)A Chevrolet went from Halifax to Vancouver. It was the first car to drive coast to coast I believe. Does anyone know what year it was and what model of car they used? I've seen the info before years ago but i can't remember where i saw it. Thanks

Found this on the web:

A trans-Canada motor trip was not possible until a Canadian highway link was completed in 1943.

Then in May of 1946, Brigadier R.A. Macfarlane, DSO, and Squadron Leader K.A. MacGillivary dipped the rear wheels of a new post-war Chevrolet in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean at Louisbourg, NS, and nine days and 4,743 miles (7636 km) later, dipped the front wheels in the Pacific Ocean at Victoria.

Good possiblity it was a 1946.

Roger,

Good 'detective' work...

Considering the date of the event (May, 1946) and the car is said to be "new," your comment about the model year seems right on!

It never ceases to amaze me as to what can be found on the www!

I have seen pics of the car. I believe it was a '46 4 door master deluxe. With Roger joggin my memory the person who gave me this info was Bill Sherk who writes for our Canadian "Old Autos" bi monthly paper. I'll have to see if he can dig up the pics for me. There where 2 other cross country trex's but they where not all done on roads. The first one was partly on a rail flat car and the other was on steel wheels on a rail track. Not sure what years but it doesn't matter because they where not Chevs. So it don't count.LOL!!

Now for you history buffs the last link of the TransCanada highway (Route 1) was through BC just west of Kamloops. The official opening was Dominion Day 1962. Our family just happened to be in the area and did not know of the event until we got stopped by the traffic parked in the road prior to all those dignitaries cutting the ribbon. Don't think that the first vehicle was a Chevy in that case either.
