I completely rebuilt my 1954 235 motor and have probably put 250 miles on it this summer since the rebuild. The motor starts great, no smoke, accelerates fine. I put a vacuum tester on it and everything checks out fine. In short, its running great, but there is a chatter noise. I replaced a 216 motor with this one and I don't remember this type of chatter. I put an aluminum timing gear in the 235 and the 216 had a fibre gear. Could this be it? The valve lash was adjusted. The motor has new lifters and pushrods. Would the rocker arms, pushrods, lifters still be the problem? Am I worrying about nothing?

It would be very difficult for a person to give an accurate answer with out hearing the noise. You could try to adjust the valves slightly "tighter"...Would try .006" and .013", hot with engine running. The valve guides could be too tight, pour some Marvel Mystery Oil thru the carb. with engine running. Was the steel crankshaft gear replaced also? The aluminum gear will usually make a singing noise which is worse when cold.

I would say at least a pint. Follow the instructions on the container. This will lubricate the valve guides temproarily and quiet the valves down IF that is the problem.
