Hello, Can someone tell me the modern replacement for valves and springs for a 28 4 cyl. engine. Thanks,Dan

We had a seminar at the Bozeman 4 cyl tour on using 70s Buick valves in a '28 head. Don't have the info available now but when people get home they might be able to post the info.

The information from the hand-out-sheet lists the 1965-67 Olds and the 1965-70 Buick exhaust valves as a substitute.

Valves and springs are also available from "Egge"

Egge is a good supplier as long as your checkbook is bulging. I have always found more reasonable options so have never had to pay their price.

It might be worth to ask some well known local workshop to make those valves. Some years ago I had problems in finding the exhaust valves to my 1965 Ford Anglia. Finally I found a set from Sweden and paid 900 Fim (apr. $170) to get them just to find out that they were standard size, while the seats in my head were oversize. Finally i took one valve to the local workshop, where they machined a new set for me and charged some 350 fim. Almost third of a price I paid for the original set.

The modern replacement for the valve springs is Allis Chalmer, G138/G139, Clevite 212-1010.

OEM springs and valves are available from several sources. Contact me if you need info.

Yes, the 261 truck piston is the best replacement.

The complete rebuild of a 1928 engine was described in detail in a series: "Class is in Session", which is located in the Tech Talk section of this forum. Unfortunately, some of the pictures are missing, having been deleted, during a change in servers. If any image is needed I can provide it from the backup disc.

I went through (rapidly) the sessions in the Tech talk, and I sincerely whish that this information would be edited into a separate file and put into some server. As a forum discussion it'll eventually disapear into bitspace. Some pictures are already gone. As a PDF-file it could be also printed if needed and put into a carrage shelf. It could be separated to step-by-step rebuild and a questions and answers -section, which would make it easier to read. I know that this is a labour consuming task, but what does mr Antiquemechanics think?

Your suggestions are with merit. I would like to clean it up and replace the pictures; however my schedule would never allow me to do it.

It is very easy to download the entire "School is in Session" to a CD that could be edited to your satisfaction. It is also easy to print the entire thread. Under the printer friendly option it takes about 200 pages. I am aware of many members both downloading and printing the information.

Unless we have the misfortune of loosing this site, the information will always be available.

I have found it easy to highlight a page of forum postings(click, drag), images and all, click COPY which puts the information into the computer clipboard, open my word processor (Microsoft Word 2003) and paste the information into a new document, save it to My Documents [Chatter28forum] and then do the same with the new posts as they come onto the site. Open [Chatter28forum] and paste onto the end of the text. It works for me.

I compiled the texts of the school sessions to a Word document. However, most of the pictures are missing as "teacher" said. Is it possible to get those? If I get the pictures, I could edit the the file to finish it. I will also compile a separate Q&A section, but it is a little bit more time consuming task. This is of course for my own use. The distribution of the file is up to the author.

No, probably not from the internet, I have had a simular problem. What happens is that we must have the images posted onto a "Internet Photo Service" and we can only link those images to this site as long as the Photo service keeps them on their server, it is not too uncommon for these "Free"services to go off line or start charging a monthly or annual fee for their services, if you don't pay they delete your account.
You could ask Ray Holland if he still has the photos on a disc or hard drive and could email you a copy, However with a busy schedule and also having to install a new hard dtive or computer this isn't always possible. Some times we that volunteer do such a good job that those requesting help forget that we have to work in helping on the site.

I gotta get back to the shop, we have a local cruise in at the Sonic, and I am going to scare some of my local car clubbers by taking a completely Vintage Stock Chevrolet! The last time I did it at a local parade the 1928 Chevrolet Sedan won first place over 6 of their "street rods" Including a beautiful Red 48 F0RD convert (Chevy 350 - 350)....of course!

Remember this saying,..

"Our cars are F0RD Tuff....by using CHEVY STUFF"

You need not say it out loud, some F0RD owners in our local club are really not receptive to any kind of criticism!

Yep, I was pretty sure that the photos are not at any server anymore, and this was actually a kind reguest to Ray, if he has a bit of time to e.g. send pictures to me. I could then edit the session into a separate file, then the pictures will not vanish anymore. Ray said earlier that he is busy and this is why I desided to compile the file. The public share of it is then up to him.
