What you need for this task is a 1949- 1953 Chevrolet Passanger car Shop Manual. I got mine (an original) from Faxon Literature. Several vendors (NCA, The Chevys of the Fortys, The Filling Station)sell a peproduction, the print isn't quite as sharp etc. I would look on eBay . Do a search for Chevrolet Shop manuals. If you like reading on the computer Keith Hardy has scanned and posted this manual on his website.

In the mean time, while waiting for the manual ( a necessity) go to chevytalk.com, enter the 49/54 forum and about 6 lines down there is site provided by KHardy, called Old Car Manuals back on line or similar, there is a manual that can be referred to there. Adjusting the linkage is pretty simple but requires one to follow the steps as given in the manual. Do not even start with out new rubber bushings on the shift rods at the upper end and spring loaded connection to the transmission as the free play associated with these two points will negate your best efforts. talk talk talk

Basically after you get the columnshaft, shifter lever and shifter box installed, set the transmission into neutral position, attach the rods to the transmission shifters, the two shifter levers on the column in neutral arms level and even with shifting lever held in neutral and adjust the two adjusters on top of the rods to this position. Easier said than done, you have to get the column shaft adjusted to be sure the box parts are in the center position, the shifting rod is the correct length (the shifter handle is the correct distance from the steering wheel rim) etc.etc. that is why you need to use the correct sequence as shown in the shop manual.
