How can I identify the side mount saddles that I think might be the correct original ones for my 1930? They are stamped steel, and where the rod goes through there is a round piece spot welded to the bottom side of the saddle. I do not have a picture to post.
Thanks

Larry

Go to this site- http://www.geocities.com/johns31chevy/Parts-Clamps.html
The one in the middle should be the one for your car. The one on the right would be for 1929. It is similar to the middle one but does not wrap the tire as much. The one you are describing sounds like one of these. chevy

Doug, Larry,
I believe that the center clamp was used on the bare tire or one with the fabric cover.
[Linked Image from geocities.com] The clamp on the right was used with the metal tire cover. [Linked Image from geocities.com] Both are correct for 1931.

Chip,Larry,
On page 18 and 39 of the 1929 Chevy News it shows pictures/drawings of the setup. It appears that the tire clamp is the smaller version. The Pictorial History of Chevrolet pages 36 and 40 show the smaller version on 1930 vehicles with fabric covers. On pages 63,64,67 show a bigger clamp on 1931 chevies with a fabric covers. I don't know when the change was made for sure but think Chevrolet started with the smaller clamp first. The clamp on the 1931's was probably the one in the center in the picture.
I had heard about the smaller used on metal tire covers but on pages 89 and 99 of the Pictorial History it clearly shows metal sidemount covers with the larger clamp. these vehicles are 1932 and probably the clamp on the left in the picture.
Is there somewhere-parts book etc. where it shows a difference for use on one or another?

Another interesting fact is that the parts book doesn't list different tire clamps for tires with a metal tire cover vs. tires without a metal tire cover. All it lists is a tire clamp for 1929, one for 1930-31 and one for 1932.   laugh laugh

Hay guys thanks for the information, I could not find anything more than what Skip found. I am just digging through thirty plus years of boxes, and am finding things that I forgot I bought for the cars nothing rare but just things like the tire saddles and other small parts.
thanks again, Larry

I took a look in the 1931 accessories booklet and it shows the middle picture clamp on a metal tire cover as well as the fabric cover. On a sidemount under" fender well tire lock" it appears the smaller clamp is there. Another interesting thing I noticed is that both the open and closed T handles can be seen in place. It seems to me that the rod for the open handle T would probably start to rust over time and didn't finish off well and that may be why they went to a closed T handle.

Doug, I have wondered about the T handles as to why two different kinds were used, and you are right the end of the rod would rust over time even in a dry climate like california, in the winter when it does rain or is damp in the mornings. I have two of the middle clamp and one of the smaller clamp I would like to find two more of the midle clamp and then both of my sedans would match. I have managed to find two good sets of side mount tire locks. Thanks again for the help, And Gator I will kep my eye open like a gator for that Clock.LOL?
