HI ALL, I'VE GOT A 52 POWERGLIDE AND THE SPEEDOMETER ON THE DASH QUIT. I PULLED THE CABLE AT THE TRANSMISSION AND HOOKED UP A DRILL TO IT AND THE SPEEDOMETER WORKED THEREFOR ELIMINATING THE HEAD OR CABLE. NOW THAT JUST LEAVES THE GEARS IN THE TRANSMISSION. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THE GEARS CAN BE PURCHASED. I'M HOPING THAT IT'S JUST THE DRIVEN GEAR SO I WANT HAVE TO TEAR INTO THE TRANSMISSION. THANKS, MICHAEL

I would remove and inspect the gear first. Very simple operation. Just loosen the large hex nut and slide gear and fitting out. The gears were sold as matching sets when new. It was recommended that both the drive and driven gears be replaced. In the real world this was seldom done. The gear set you would need is part #3694622 later changed to 3704230 and fits 1950-54 Power Glides.

For the gears try bwbugay@aol.com.......he may see this and leave a message.
If it were mine I would open it up and inspect. Will be necessary to split the U joint and the gear is just inside. Not a real tough job but I would recommend following the shop manual. The drive gear is pressed onto the rear shaft of the planet carrier. Old could be pulled off and new driven on with no problem. Would be the safe way to go.

`I new chevyb would be along. You have two options. Install the used gear and see what happens (very little work) or at least take the U joint apart and look for the extracted teeth. Some had metal teeth and some plastic. If metal I would remove the pieces for sure. Otherwise for the little use you may give the car the used one may last for years.

Have you checked your cable and speedomoter to insure neither is stuck/frozen? You need to pin-point the reason the previous gear was damaged.

ANTIQUEMECHANIC, THE FIRST THING I DID WAS HOOK A CORDLESS DRILL TO THE CABLE AND THE SPEEDOMETER WORKED, THUS ELIMINATING THE CABLE AND SPEEDOMETER HEAD. BUT THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION, SOMETIMES THE SIMPLEST THINGS ARE OVER-LOOKED!!!!!!!!!

I would suggest disconnecting the cable from the head and spinning just the head by hand. Its easy to do as the part the cable connects to is exposed. Then I would try spinning just the cable by hand , and last I would lubricate the inner cable. If grease is used a thin coat is applied to the lower 2/3's of the inner cable only. Motor oil also can be used and it will help to soften any hardened grease inside the cable housing. Just spread the oil on the inner cable with your fingers as you insert it into the housing. Usually if the speedometer head is bad it will make noise and the needle will jump around.
