Just had my radiator boiled and rodded out and need to know if I need to use a 4# or no pressure radiator cap. I have several locals tell me non pressure, and some tell me to use a 4# cap. Both can be purchased at Chev's of the 40s and National Chevy, but I do not want to get the wrong one. Thanks, Roger

Roger, I use a 4# on my 53 truck and you can purchase one at Nappa auto parts...Oscar

Pressure cap history-
1948 cars all had a 4 lb. cap - first year. 1949 cars did not have a pressure cap. 1950-51 stick shift cars did not have a pressure cap. 1950-52 Power Glides had a pressure cap. 1952 sticks had a pressure cap. 1953 all had a pressure cap. Up to this point they were all a 4 pound.
1954 all had a 7 pound cap, which was used thru 1957.
The "book" says a 1951 stick (and other non pressure cars) can use a pressure cap for "heavy duty" operation.This would include higher altitudes and mountain country.
If the radiator is in good condidtion there is no reason that a 7 pound could not be used in place of the 4 pound.

Thanks for the replies. As always, appreciate the help. I think I can use the 4# since I live at about 5000 feet. The one that was on it was non pressure and worn out. Thanks again, Roger
