I have vertical lift at the front of my hood, how do i adjust latch to be latched tightly? The shop manual is not working. thanks

If by verticle lift you mean that the hood can be moved up and down when its closed-
The adjustment is made by the pointed center guide that it on the upper latch.You will see that the guide is threaded and locked with a lock nut.Loosen the lock nut and turn the guide (its slotted on the point) clockwise to shorten it.Go about two turns at a time.

I saw as soon as i looked at it the 57 latch is not the kind you are refering to, the center is all one piece with no adjustment there

Sorry, I was thinking of my '50.
The 1955 and up have adjustable screws with rubber bumpers - one at each side.They are on the hood and contact the outter ends of the tie bar.Are yours missing?If I remember correctly there is a little flat spot stamped into the ends of the tie bar where they make contact.I will need to get a good look at mine tomorrow.

on 55,
theres 2 bolts in front, 1 small bolt in back, loosen back, then take out 2 bolts, in front holding top latch on, put thin washer between bolt, each bolt, tighten bolts these washers will push out top latch out some , and hood will be tight.
