thanks for the transmission oil info. it seems to leak by in the front somewhere.
today i drove my car to the a & p. when i came out and tried to start it........nothing..push on the starter button and no noise. It was getting power.. tried to jump it but still nothing.
any ideas?

Is the foot pedal engaging the the button on the starter? It is located next to the battery cable on the starter itself.

What you describe is typical of a dead spot on the starter. It may require rebuilding. That is time for a good shove and pop clutch type starter.

Can starters for 47 chevys be rebuilt in regular shops? Or is it better to order a newly rebuilt one on line at the filling station or another place? Who do you suggest? Thanks

Could be a stuck starter brush or a bad spot in the armature as Ray stated.....also could be a bad battery cable, or dead battery.
Any good starter rebuilder should be able to find the problem if it is the starter.There is nothing high-tech in a 1947 starter.

I have always found that I have better luck (and about the same money) going to a local rebuild shop, versus a Mail Order rebuilt unit, on Starters or Generators.
Mail Order - you never know where they were rebuilt, or what condition the core was in -
Local Guy - uses your core, and can be easily found if there is a problem later.

And, if you mail order a rebuilt starter you will probably get a starter that is not correct for your application or a starter with the Delco-Remy tag removed. Get your original starter rebuilt, it is no big deal. There are also some dudes that rebuild starters that advertise in the "Services Offered" section of the G&D.  :) :grin:

I would reccomend a local shop, take it in and pick it up, you need to cultivate local repair shops for incidental repairs (starters & generators)if you expect to drive an old car. Shipping charges can be as much or more than rebuilding a starter or a generator. Light weight and delicate items are candidates for sending out to out of state special repair shops. Carbs, speedometers, distributors etc. fit into the send out stuff. (IMHO)
This is just another reason to join VCCA and a local VCCA Region, become active, meet guys that have been doing this for years, they will give you good leads for repairmen and vendors in the area.
