Is there a source for slotted wood screws? I am looking for replacement screws for the window mechanism and door latch board. Also the domed slotted screws for the door latch. I know I will need a good supply because I am finding a lot of broken and bent ones. There are plenty of screws at my local hardware store but they are philips head. Not developed in the 1930's.

Well you are partially right, I think the first appearance of a Phillips head screw on a GM car was around 1937, also the first year for the Wacky One to appear also. I remember it well!

While you are looking around you may consider using stainless steel screws. You should use a pilot hole and lubrication (soap)when you are installing them.

30usa1, jyd's right...slotted wood screws are really common...but, as you said, you had looked in the specialty bins instead...you shouldn't have any trouble finding them... now, slotted head sheet metal screws, those seem to be harder to come by every year...  epi

Try and find slotted stainless sheet metal screws, they are even harder to find. I'm still looking. :(

You are not as likely to find the slotted head screws at the "mega home center". The local hardware or the fastener supplier will have them or be able to order them. Most new ones now come from Asia so may be of lessor quality. Specialty slotted screws are getting impossible to find. Molding screws (# 5) are really tough. They can be made but who wants a 1k-10k (that's thousand) of them? Same problem with four banger head bolts and other fastners used in our old Chevys.

chip, I agree with you there...I can still find some old stock occasionally at small hardware stores...getting pretty tough... I had an old box of miscellaneous auto fasteners from the 50's-70's that I was going to toss, until I realized that they weren't going to be easy to find anymore...fortunately, I kept it, so I can rummage through it when I need something... epi

30USA1, I had the same problem and I live in a good size area. My saving grace was looking on line at the "McMaster.com site. They carry just about any type of slotted screws that you need. You can order on line and they ship UPS. Also way cheaper than buying the little plastic bags at the local hardware store. There is a link to that web site on one of the threads regarding water pump packings. Hope this will help.

I live in the southern california area, and I do find it hard to find the correct screws, square nuts and bolts for our cars sometimes, but there is a small hardware store that caters to the commercial business, and I have found just about everything I need and what they do not have on the shelf they well order I just ordered screws for my fuel pump. And there box of 100 are not much more than a package of screws from a regular hardware store. About the phillips head screws I think that 1936 was the first year for them I owned two 1936 5 window coups one was number 9 off the Oakland assembly line and my other was a mid year the early car had slotted screws and the other had phillips both car were original the later car was a one owner with 44000 on it when I bought it.

Just curious...but what's the differance if you use stainless phillips head behind the upholstery? No ones gonna see it...?

Yes Gator that is the link.I like the catalog Rex supplies as its all GM -has excellent pictures and descriptions and also applications.It saves a lot of research time and is a good reference source.

You are right, no one can see behind the upholstery but you know what is back there.  The one area that I need the slotted screws that is more noticable, are the mounting brackets for the robe rail, and replacement screws for the door latch plate. I looked in the mega store, the local small hardware store (found some but not with oval head or correct size), and even contacted a motor yatch facility, only type available were phillips.  I will try some of the above mentioned links.
