Could someone enlighten me as to the purpose of the 2" x 1 1/4" black rectangle painted on the bottom of the cowl in the area under the hood of a 31? I'm sure there is a reason.

The black painted area was put there by the factory. And, the Chevrolet factory pinstriping drawings also show that area as being painted black as well. As for why......I have been trying to find that out myself!

no holes, just a black rectangle that's hidden by the hood when it's down. no doubt someone at Chevrolet thought it was necessary at the time.

from the factory were rectangles painted on each side of the cowl, at the bottom, right above the splash aprons. the lower rear corner of the hood sides cover them. they serve no apparent purpose.

Is that a high stress area that may be prone to cracking and the plate is a reinforement?

Plate?? No reinforcement plate is at that location. That area is PAINTED black, and Dads 31 wanted to know why that small area was painted black by the factory when it serves no purpose.

wink :)

That is a good question. Don't know of a good answer. It is on all the paint specification drawings so is not likely an error.

It is definitely not an error. The black painted areas on both sides of the cowl were on my 1930 Sport Coupe and I have seen the black painted areas on other cowls as well. Weird as to why these painted areas are there.

It is my opinion the black squares were due to a a jig or fixture connected to the body at that point during paint operations. When the jig was removed, the areas were painted black.

Good guess. However, when the black paint in those areas on the cowl of my '30 Sport Coupe was removed the two areas were painted body color underneath!

Hi:

This black rectangle appears on Factory Paint Instruction Drawing reprints for both 1931 and 1932 model years, available from "The Filling Station". The drawings do not state the rectangle's purpose.

The original drawings were preserved in the Pinky Randall literature collection.

Regards,

Walt 32
