My steering wheel is a dull black color. Should it be left "natural" or should it be painted? IF painted, would it be gloss black?

They were a gloss black when new.I used a black lacquer on mine as it dries faster and harder than regular enamel.

There are many products out there that might work I am going to use Acrylic Urathane it is an emanel and is very durable, you might want to check at your local automotive paint store. Lacquer is grate but in California it is hard to come be. Good Luck Larry

If you have any cracks in it to repair a good method is super glue. You apply coat after coat to the crack until it is over filled then sand it with 1200 paper. After paint it will be new again and it holds up.

I used JB Weld on the cracks in my steering wheel on my 31, then filed and sanded and painted it with Rustoleum Industrial High Gloss enamel that I bought at Home Depot, five or six coats letting dry between coats and that was three years ago and it still looks like new. :) :)

What was the last year that the wooden steering wheel was used?

1928 was wood and the first time it specified natural finish. It was a walnut.

Guys,
Was finally able to fabricate something to pull the steering wheel off my 31. Now on to filling the hairline cracks and repainting. Thanks for the advice.
