Need some help on replacing the Timing Gears..
The Cam gear (54 tooth Fiber one) let go at the hub
of the gear. The Crank Gear I know where the "0" mark
is on that plus the Keyway so I can position that.
My books say to line up the Marks opposite.
Do I line up the marks across from each other?
How do I get it back in time?
Thanks
Dave

Hi 36Dave,

Not really sure at what stage you are at. From your description I assume you have installed a new timing gear and you are ready to reinstall the cam and gear. The mark on the crank gear is to be directly in mesh with the mark on the cam gear. This completes the cam timing and this operation will have no relation to the installation of the distributor and the final timing.

It will probably be much easier to remove the camshaft from the engine (remove rocker gear, push rods, cam followers, distributor and fuel pump) to replace the cam gear. When you reinstall the cam align the marks (1 on cam and 1 on crank) then refit the valve gear.
The cam gear can be replaced without removing shaft but for the inexperienced it is much easier to take cam out especially if it a press fit.
