I am Sure this is a realy dumb question but I always thought the 1939 Chevy was the first year for the column shift and had a transmission with the shift linkage out the side of the transy. But a friend of mine said his father owned a 1939 chevy with a floor shift?
Were there 2 shift postion options availabel (floor and column)? If so did they both use the side entry shift bars on the transy (same transy)?

Ignition on, Push real hard, jump in, slip into second, Pop clutch, and ... away

The vacuum assisted column shift was optional in 1939.I would say about 75 percent of the cars had the column shift. It was a $15.00 option.
The same transmission case was used on both and the cover was on the top for both.In 1940 the cover was on the side and the vacuum shift parts completely different
My 1939 has the floor shift. There seems to be no pattern as to which models had the floor shift (Master 85 or Master DeLuxe).Probably jus determined on what the dealer prefered to order.Back then 99 percent of the cars sold were out of the dealers stock.

I have a 1939 Cherolet Master 85, it came complete with floor shift with a rose coloured knob, it is a California car up here in beautiful British Columbia Canada.

My Master DeLuxe also has the rose colored knob. Its the seconed knob that I have had for the car. The original kind of dried up. :(

Yes, 39 was the first year with column shift. It was available both ways and can be changed easily by removing top cover of transmission and inserting the floor stick or using the side linkage top cover for the column shift. I have just converted a floor shift to a column shift. Most were column shift in my opinion.

It had both. Replacing the top plate of transmission with the side linkage or the floor stick will do the job. I just changed a floor shift to column shift on a 39 coupe.,
