When my '34 5-window was sitting behind my grandfather's equipment shed, the headliner was long gone and we could see chicken wire over the roof bows. In the Fisher body manual, all there is is a padding under the leatherette roof material. Was the chicken wire in mine added during an earlier repair? Or did they have several ways of doing it?

The chicken wire is the built-in radio antenna. Its was built into the roof during assembly. You will find an antenna lead under the dash on the drivers side. The lead runs up thru the left windshield post and it will be connected to the chicken wire.I guess that you didn't realize that you had such a modern car. :)

How about that! Another mystery solved! Thanks Gene. I can assure you that both the radio and its antena are long gone.
Best regards, Landman

Gene, what wire runs up the drivers side windshield post on a 36. I have one there but its not connected to anything. Its a smaller black wire and not sure what its for? Could this be a antena lead also? I know that there was a antena under the running boards for the radio.

The chicken wire was used in the roof of the models that did not have the all steel top.The 1936 antennas were the straps under the running boards. Most end up putting a cowl side antenna on their '36 - incorrect but it works. Don't know what your wire is but could it be for the dome light?

The dome light wire on my 36 runs up through the passenger side post and I'm pretty sure it's the original wiring. Could the other side be for a speaker?

The speaker wire was a multi wire. Three wires inside a sheath. Used for the header speaker.

no Its not for the dome light, mine works great. It looks as if its been there the life of the car. when I rewired the hole car it showed nothing of this wire in the paperwork that came with the new harness. I left it there incase it was for something I didn't know about. Its a black wire Iam guessing a 16 or 18 gauge wire. its in the same condition as the rest of the old wires before I replaced them. ??????? Hopefully someone out there will know whats its for. Ken

The wire in the roof of my 35 Standard is not chicken wire. It is more like hardware cloth, approx. 1/4 inch squares as I recall. It is soldered to the wire for the radio antenna as described above. Mike
