Rusty 37 Master	I have discovered numerous "tricks" to making the dash lights brighter in older classic vehicles. - Just replacing the bulbs will help. The light output of filament bulbs diminishes over time. Even replacing a 10 year old bulb makes a difference. - Cleaning the inside of the glass/plastic instrument covers makes a big difference. - Painting the inside of the instrument housing gloss white is a real benefit. Due to heat from the bulbs, time, and dirt those surfaces really darken. - As Tiny noted, make sure the rheostat and wiring, especially the connectors and grounds are clean with no oxidation. - I would consider going to a brighter bulb if it will fit and you know that the extra heat will not cause damage. I know that there are lots of people who are sold on LED's. I'm not in that camp. In many cases they are actually too bright. Many of them are not dimmable. A third problem is that the geometry of the bulb might not project the light where it is needed.
