The 1929 Head and Head Gasket and Block have two size holes for water to flow between the Head and the Block. The largest holes are approximately three quarters of an inch in diameter. It is these larger holes I need help to understand.
I just pulled the head to run the valves. When the head came off I found lots of rust and some ports plugged. I have cleaned the ports, but cannot determine if the larger holes in the Head and Head Gasket front should have matching holes in the Block. The Heads front and rear has two of these large ports (four ports total) running across the head from side to side. The Head Gasket reflects these ports with a matching opening. However, my 29 Block has ports that match only the rear openings. Because of the Head and Head Gasket both have these holes, the Block front shows some wear and discoloration.
Except for these front ports all the other Head, Head Gasker, and Engine ports match.
Gingerly cleaning these nonmatching Block spots I have fond the metal is “weak”, but best I can tell these are not rust plugged ports. It appears these spots are not supposed to be open to match the Head, but I cannot tell for sure.
My question is should I open these ports?

No, do not attempt to open them! There are not supposed to be any large ports in the front of the block, only in the rear as you have discovered.

wink :)
