A short horse is soon curryed.
He had enough money to burn a wet mule.
There's no shame in being poor, it's just so darned inconvenient.
If frogs had wings, they wouldn't have bruises on their butts.

Just wondering how many know what,
"He's three sheets to the wind" means
or
"He went bellywump over the fence."
 wink

"Dumb as a box of rocks"

or

"Dumb as a sack of hammers"

Isn't it funny that we have a bunch of expressions about how dumb a person can be but I can't think of any expressions about someone being smart...why is that?

Three sheets to the wind refers to the four masted schooners. If they were only carrying three masts with sail (Sheets) & a strong wind came up they would roll & pitch & were impossible to steer a true course.
The saying came ashore when a sailor hit port, had a belly full of booze & rolled & pitched staggering back to the ship like a schooner with only "Three sheets to the Wind"

Never heard of "Bellywump" before but sure is a great word.

Kangaroo loose in the top paddock
Sandwhich short of a picnic
Bottle short of a six pack

There is probably more along the same line.

Not to be too picky, but sheets are the lines that control the sails, not the sails themsevles. But losing the sheets to the wind causes the same lack of control. Sorry, I'm a former sailor.

As legend has it, a "brass monkey" was a holder or storage rack in which cannon balls (or shot) were stacked on a ship. Supposedly when the "monkey" with its stack of cannon balls became cold, the contraction of iron cannon balls led to the balls falling through or off of the "monkey."

By the way, a "brass monkey" is also the nickname for the Cunard Line's house flag which depicts a gold lion rampant on a red field.

"THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND."
My impression was when I was a kid that when a sail boat wanted to go up wind they used the three sheets [sails] to deflect the wind an zig-zag back and forth so they could proceed up wind. But, what do I know about sail boats, all seven of us brothers were in the Army. laugh laugh

Originally "Sheets" were "sails"
The controlling lines were "Sheet Lines" or "Sheet ropes"
"Haul the sheets" or "Trim the Sheets" was reference to the "Sheets" not the ropes.
The path of time has led to the ropes as being termed "Sheets" because that is what you hauled on.
If the ropes were "Sheets" why THREE?
I spent 12 months as a tourist guide aboard HMS Victory during my time in the Royal Navy & we had to learn the old terms & sayings before being let loose on the paying public.

Thanks Kipper for the info....sometimes people forget the terms are different aboard ship; remember when I first got in the navy and was on the deck gang and made the mistake of using the term 'rope' instead of 'line'; the boatswain's mates made sure to get me to use the correct terms. The only thing we called 'ropes' on board was what civilians would call steel cables.

RGwiz, yes, I know where 'son of a gun' started...LOL

Gator,

Captain John F. Gillooly, of West Virginia, USS WASP. Nov, 69 - Nov. 70.

We are proud of him. I guess the NAVY thought Charleston,WV was a sea port!

Or "Give Him Enough Rope etc."
