I just don't see how people can go thru life without accepting the consequences of their choices / actions. And have any hope of living in the 'real' world.

If you 'flunk' - you flunk. What is this 'deferred success' krapola???

There was some good TV on today; 'Rides' did a show on the cars in Jay Leno's shop.

I tend to not like 'famous' people; a lot think that they are just too special. I was surprised by Leno, he was doing the work himself and getting dirty like most of us, he also showed that he had a lot of knowledge about his vehicles and he DRIVES all of them.

He really likes to restore and use steam cars and of course with his money he has some really special cars.

He was doing a 'sympatric restoration' of a '27 Duesenberg Model X (only 4 known) it was great to see someone doing a restoration back to original.

'Sympatric restoration'…I had not heard this term before, basically it is like our HPOCF category cars; no repainting or new interior or etc. Only some new wires and all drive line items cleaned and checked out and the motor rebuilt.

It was such a nice change to see cars being treated the way the VCCA members like to treat cars. laugh laugh laugh

We need more Lenos and fewer Coddingtons.

I wouldn't 'knock' Leno. It would only make me look 'stupid.' Besides the fact that (even tho I don't know him) I 'like' him. He seems like a good guy from what we (I) can see of him on his show and in articles, etc. etc.

But I will go so far as to say you have a 'big head start' when you're pockets are as deep as Jay's pockets must be!

Carry on Mr. Leno!!! "Watching" you have fun with your cars puts a smile on my face.

So the next logical step would seem to be if a TV production company would combine the approach of Leno's philosophy along with the structure of all those various home restoration programs out on cable, and demonstrate how people do old car restorations on a budget. Get a '49 Dodge or a '38 Chevrolet up and running for under $3,500! I'd watch! Heck, come on over with a video crew and I'll do a real life demonstration...! :)

Gator: In the garage next to the 1927 Duesenberg Model X that Leno found appeared to be some kind of 1930's convertible coupe. I missed the first part of the show. Did they say what that other car was and did Leno get that one too? laugh laugh

JYD, No, they didn't ID it (saw that rear too) and I was dying to find out what it was...looked a little like a mid-30's Chevy roadster? Leno did not buy it also...maybe too common for him?

If I was near to it maybe the address could be found with a little research.

The daughter (seller) had not even opened the garage for 6 years and the Duesenburg was squirreled away in '47. A classic "barn find".

Funny thing (not counting its' value $$) I would prefer having the roadster over the Duesenburg.

How did you like the steamers?

I only got to see the Doble since I only viewed the last 15 minutes of the show. Totally forgot that the show was on until it was almost over. At any rate, did they say what Leno paid for the Duesy or how he found out about it? That was one heck of a garage find.....and if I were him I would have nailed that roadster or cabriolet too. It looked like a large car from the rear, and it definitely wasn't a Chevy. It had body lines like an Auburn or a similar classic. How could he leave that one behind?

Hello All,

Over memorial day in a small town in Maryland I started talking to a guy, on the street, about old cars. He directed me to a friend, who lives on main, street that has a collection of old unmolested cars.
Two buildings full - two types of steam cars, etc., my head was twisting like your gremlins.
The guy is old with no family. Said he tried to give them to the Smithsonian but they have no room.
Said he dosen't know what will happen to them but he does not like Resto-Rods.
The guys father use to be a car dealer. Exotic cars but sorry, no Chevrolets. Stanley steamer was one the other was a Dolbie? Some I never heard of. There was one solid brass that was made in Maryland. I think he said there was only three made. It had a name but I can't remember. There were two Pierce Arrows.

Hello All,& MM,

You must have been watching FOX this morning with the Express comment.

One or two of the vehicles were Locomobiles and steam powered. One or two were called Essex. Its starting to come back to me but since he didn't like Resto-Rods I knew it was futile to persue. Another was an Overland. My wife is my witness! Dust everywhere.

John, Man-o-man what a junkyard tour that would be...

Leno's 'Doble' (spelling?) is suppose to be the "only one in existence".

JYD, no they never said what he paid for the '27; you are right, with his money he should have gotten the other one too.

Sad part of the show was that the sellers' Dad had purchased these cars in the '40s to restore and he never got the time to restore them...

John, maybe you and I can find that place again and broker them to Leno? He loves steamers...

Hi Gator,

I'm going to give this my best shot. Years ago an article was written by Andy Granatelli(spelling?) about the Doble (spelling?).

He told what a wonderful automobile it was. It seems it was designed by a young man from (MIT?).

The rights to the car were bought out by an automobile company and it was supressed.

Now - I remember asking this guy in Maryland if he had one of those and I thought he pointed to one in the corner of the building.

I still have his business card and it just would not be nice to post his name.

I've followed this line from the outset & luckily have never heard of this Coddington fella.

We should be teaching our children respect.
Respect for each other, the future & the past.
With out respect we have anarchy!
If they/we respect the object/person then you start to care for them/it for what they/it are. We must educate by example by showing respect.

Also.........Surely there's been an after market since the car was invented?

Blimey! got a headache now, gotta lay down

Hi Gator and All,

I have contacted a friend who brokers antique & collectable cars. He is going to try to buy the whole lot. I'll let you know the result. ( He said he will be in Silver Springs tomorrow - the last part is a joke!)
