I wanted it BIG!
Raymundo! How about this one?

After you all have seen the LST in which our member served on I will remove it and replace it with a lower resolution version.

Done!

At a class reunion meeting last month I found out that all of the guys attending went to SE Asia; some were USN like me, some USMC, some USAF, some USA; sadly, some in our class died there...

850 have died since the 2004 Memorial Day plus the many who many never heal...

The ones who gave all for our country should be remembered more than once a year...IMHO.

Hey Dopey. (I really like "Richard" a lot better than 'Dopey.')

I think your suggestion of "awe-inspiring" is a great description! That really is one helluva photo!!

And I couldn't agree more with what Gator said. Giving "all" for your country is as 'all' as it can get. I sure think about my father (who gave his all in 1944) more than once a year. But it is nice that there's "special days" like Memorial Day and Veteran's Day and so on.

Bill.

Our region has many vets. Seven from the Korean
times, mostly Navy. Several from Vietnam and many
more from WW2 to Iraq. We have one young guy who did a tour in Iraq and
is still serving in the USMC stateside.
While stationed at Pearl Harbor, I had the good
fortune to eat with the submariners at their
barracks. "How do you want your eggs"? "Rare
or well done steak"? Great food and lots of it!

MrMack - you mentioned an LST in San Diego in the early 60s. Well, I spent some time there in the mid 60s watching the shipyard workers re-commission my LST, Iredell County LST 839. We trained for a couple months, then headed for Viet Nam and made a few trips up the Da Nang River. One of the trips we delivered 800 pallets of canned beer with each pallet holding 200 cases. We didn't fire a shot in the war zone and we were never fired upon. A couple days ago I ran into a tourist that was visiting from Iredell County, which is in North Carolina.
Thanks for the photo.

Roger

Veterans Day has lost out here; the eleventh day of the eleventh month has been dropped as a school holiday by the local school board this last year. The Vets and the people who protested were given the choice of Memorial Day or Veterans Day but not both...sad, so sad...I guess giving your life or limb or years of your life to your country just isn't worth as much today... :( :( :( :(

Gator, that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard!!! All of you vets made this country what it is. To me, you are the most important people in this nation. Why not give a day off for the kids. After all, without the veterans, we may not have school!

Hey GATOR:

Why don't you 'post' an address where 'we'can write to the school board that made the folks choose between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.... I'd sure be willing to write a letter to them. And I bet there'd be a lot of other members in Chevy Chat who would also be willing to write them a letter.

Those school board folks definitely need to hear there's a lot of people who disagree with them on this matter.

Incidentally, are the Federal, State, County, Local gov't offices (whichever of those you have in Gainesville) OPEN or CLOSED on Nov 11??

And one more question: does the President's brother know about this??

auto curse Bill.

We fought the board about this for several years before losing the battle to them...blamed it on the hurricanes and state requirement (Jeb Bush)of making up lost days the other one of their big arguments was that the holiday had to be on a specific day (11/11) of the week and sometimes the 11th fell on a inconvenient day of the week (for them), like on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, so some of the kids would skip another day Monday or Friday and make themselves a 4 day weekend. Most of their parents wanted the 4 days too.

The government has already made us observe most of the other 'special' days only on Mondays; which is weird to me. Famous Birthdays are observed on a day which is not the persons' birthday; next they will change Thanksgiving and Christmas to a Monday or Friday for convenience.

All of the Presidents birthdays are lumped together and Easter and Good Friday are a no-no and gone, Columbus Day has been long gone and Christmas is now 'winter holidays', everything is so PC. But of course they do close all of the schools on the day of the university homecoming parade.

I will post the emails for the school board members on this string here:

2004-2005 School Year Calendar
Five school days were lost as a result of Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. The state of Florida is requiring all districts that missed five days or less to make up all lost days. The revised district calendar for the 2004-05 school year is below.
Tuesday, August 10 - Monday, August 16............Pre-Planning (5 Weekdays)
Tuesday, August 17.................. First Day for Students
Monday, September 6.........Holiday - Labor Day
Friday, October 22 .....Pupil Holiday/Teacher Workday
Friday, November 12.... Holiday - UF Homecoming

Etc, etc, etc…

The following days were holidays or pupil holidays/teacher workdays, but will now be regular school days: Nov. 11 (Veterans Day); Nov. 24 (Wednesday before Thanksgiving); Jan. 14 (Teacher Workday); Feb. 21 (Presidents’ Day); March 25 (Teacher Workday).

Thanks for your help...

THANKS FOR LETTING ME VENT SOME ALSO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, It is now June, 1 2005, and it seems not all that long ago it was June 6, "D" Day and it is still AWE-inspiring.

We have finally found a subject that every one here that was heard from agreed on, We owe so much to all the American service men and women that gave all and continue to give all for our cherished freedoms, let us never forget!...

Even if I did get 3 more units in the pic. than Ray's 700 Ha!
God Bless you all!

Gator, Did they not have a special Monday off for "National Pervert, Body Peircing, Child Molester and Drug Pusher Appreciation Day"? Maybe they will lump them all together for administration convenience!

Didn't they have any snow days left in Florida this year?

Just kidding!....it is hell getting so old and decrepid!

Gator:

I've just sent an email regarding this "one-or-the-other" situation to the "school board members" at the address you provided.

(You indicated: To send an email to all Board members:
boardmembers@sbac.edu)

I've sent you a "blind copy" of the email.

I'm going to (attempt to) 'copy and paste' that email here in this post. If I mess up and don't do it corrrectly, will you please do it for me.

I'm really not a whacko; but I feel very strongly about this terrible decision and I sure hope other members of Chevy Chat will paraphrase my email into their own words and send it to the school board also. Or if you don't like my 'thoughts' - write one of their own and send it to the school board.

They made a horrible decision to 'outlaw' one of our greatest and most important traditional holidays of our American traditional and culture. Maybe some mail will help them understand that.

Here's my email (I hope). Yea....looks like it's here!!! Bill.

Dear Board Members:

Regarding your decision about Memorial Day OR Veteran's Day being a holiday observed by your school district, I have the following thoughts.

Our American culture is full of choices. From the cars we decide to buy, to the television channels we decide watch, to the neighborhood we choose to live in. In America we are fortunate to have choices. Our culture is all about "choice."

But, choice should not be a factor in selecting a single day for us to memorialize those who have given their lives in service to our country. We have two distinct days, Veteran's Day and Memorial Day, that are part of our American Tradition and both should remain at the core of our remembrances. Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day have their own meaning, their own ceremonies and their own cherished values. Americans should remember each and every day of the year those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but surely celebrate in earnest on both unique holidays, Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.

It's a terrible shame you decided to tread on values that span generations of American service, commitment and sacrifice. I can only hope (and pray) that you change this horrible decision back to celebrating both traditional holidays for the coming school year and beyond.

Gator Wayne:

I'm REALLY glad to hear your school board re-installed Vet's Day for the upcoming school year. Even if it is based on hurricane lost days and all. What they did is sure a step in the right direction.

Maybe some more letters from 'us' and others would help them look to some other days to 'cut' before they 'cut' Veteran's Day again!!!

Anyway, if I helped, I'm happy I did! And, if anyone wants to use some/most of the email letter I wrote to 'get started' or get some ideas, go right ahead.

Bill.
