I went round and round with this a couple of years ago. strip - prime - sand - prime - sand - paint - fail repeat. It was frustrating, but the best results I got came out of Jim's process above. Clean up the plate to bare metal, fill/prime get the substrate looking good, spray paint the plate w/ the number/letter color, mask as best you can, spray paint the background, remove the mask, clean up with some LIGHT wet sanding at the edges of the numbers/letters, and clearcoat. Mine FINALLY came out the way I wanted it to look. (Great discussion) None of the other techniques worked for me, and I think I tried them all. Bowtie

For those interested in trying the brayer method I have found a source for the tool. Quite by chance I found a brayer kit at a local Michael's Arts and Craft store. (I believe this store is a nationwide US chain; sorry, they may not be in Canada, the UK, AU or elsewhere. If interested, look locally at an arts and craft store).

They have a kit that comes with 3 different rollers of varying firmness or nap, so possibly one of them would hold enough paint to roll a plate in a stroke or two. I think I saw a price of around $25 for the kit.

I wish I had thought of Jim's method; it might have saved me about 40 hours of work!

still don't know how to put the pics in the posts here directly, but wanted to show you how our $4.99 plate turned out...

[edited 10/23/2005 - link to pics webpage removed, since bigboob was kind enough to post the pics below]

the first photo is how it looked when it arrived...next we stripped the plate...the third photo was taken after the plate was straightened, repaired, and base color applied (aerosol spray paint)...the last after the black lettering was applied (by hand with brush)...

Kepi,
These pics have been color balanced. Do they look more or less true than the actual plates?

Edit...
These pics are copies of original from Kepi's post.

bob & ray,

thanks for posting my pics...the (bottom) color-balanced pics appear too light and yellow...the actual plate is darker & more orange...the photo background is black...the upper pics look right...

also, they look about right in my linked album...

my monitor has been calibrated using the adobe photoshop standard...
