I came across a real nice wooden steering wheel for my 1930 LR 1 1 /2 ton truck. It has very little wear and the grooves in the face are very sharp. My question is it looks nice natural but were the wooden steering wheels painted? The wheel has 8 pieces all tightly together but it is obvious the wood is of separate pieces and colors.
Does anybody have any idea-or should I just go with what I want and leave it naturally finished.
Thanks.

The 1930 truck wood steering wheel was painted black as were the four metal spokes (spider). However, on the passenger cars, the metal spokes were covered with black rubber sleeves, and the upper aluminum bezel was higher on the passenger cars to allow for the thickness of the black rubber sleeves on the metal spokes. The truck wheel did not use black rubber sleeves, therefore the upper aluminum bezel was thinner.
