I recently bought a 1931 chevrolet 4 door sedan with no engine or transmission. Is there a serial no. stamped on the frame somewhere? The floor board does not exist, so there is no label Plate there.

Go to this previous discussion Click Here

and then if you want more info, in the SEARCH box at the top of the main page, enter the word SERIAL for the 1929-32 Forum and then click on the long listing of previous discussions. That will be quicker than wating for a posting during the summer months. Most everybody is out driving their chebby's now. chevy

With the engine and serial number plate missing there is no way to determine what the id numbers are.

At the risk of opening a can of worms. If your car is currently resgistered with the engine number, can you buy an "old title" with a new tag and attach it the floor board, and still be legal? What is the offical VCCA view on this? laugh

As far as I know, the VCCA has no written view on car registrations. Besides, if your car is already legally registered under the engine number (as many are, including ALL of my cars) why would you want to change it and open up a can of worms with the DMV??  laugh laugh laugh

Because I lost my bill of sale from the guy I bought it off of.
I see in the G&D that some guys (one in particular) are offering old titles with the tag to attach to the floor board.
And if I ever wanted to sell it I would need the BOS.

Do you currently have a registration slip and the serial number plate on the floor board?  laugh laugh

I currently have the car registered and insured with the engine number. Here in Jersey, you have to register a car within a certain time limit (or pay a penalty, which I did) then you are issued a new title in your name. That one shows the engine number. the floor board tag was gone!My concern is that I don't have a serial number for my car. If it's all the same with the DMV then I just add a new (scrapped) number on the floor board tag. OK? laugh

If the car is already registered in your name with the engine number, and you have a current title, then you are okay. I wouldn't worry about the serial number plate being missing since, in your case, the car serial number doesn't appear on your title anyway. :cool2: laugh laugh laugh

Yeah :cool2: What I should have said was that the DMV had to do a "search" and it cost $10.50 for a new title because I couldn't produce the signed off title of the previous owner. So I'll live with the fact that I don't have the tag number on the floor board.
