My car is pretty much finished and now I'am trying to fine tune things. I'am concerned about adjusting the steering box mechanism as I think I have it to tight and yet there is still significant play in the steering wheel ?

Further to this we have all new tires and I'am not pleased with the way the wheels appear to turn out of round a little. Can these disc wheels be adjusted by the bolts and nuts on them to true them up accurately ?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi brock,

In adjusting the steering on a 1927 you have the option of turning the screw part in such a manner as to use new teeth. This will tighten the steering when the wheels are straight ahead.

The two adjustments you have available are the end screw at the bottom of the steering column and the side plate by adding or removing gasket material. Incidentally, the 1927 was the last year of washers for bearings. In 1928 these washers were replaced with two ball bearing units.

Assuming you have done all the correct adjusting and still have "play", take a look at kingpins, axle bearing adjustment and 'slack' in the tierods.

Not aware of any user adjustment on the disc wheels. I would think a wheel shop could 'true' them up for you.

In addition, check the condition of the bushings in the steering box. Worn bushings around the pitman arm shaft can introduce "play". The best thing is to get a buddy to rock the steering wheel gently while you watch the movement of all the steering components.
