I need to repack the water pump in my '28 truck, however, I do not know what size the packing is. Can anyone give me the cross section of the packing.

Hi dateshake,

Generally speaking, if you need to replace/add to, the packing on a water pump it probably needs to be rebuilt as the shaft is worn also. Rebuild kits are readily available and include the packing material.

Not sure why you need the size of the packing. Go to your nearest plumbing supply and purchase a pack of the white Teflon packing material and use that as it is much better for a repair.

You can run a search on the forum and you will find many references to this problem.

Some dudes use the stuff used to patch a tubless tire from the outside, (The rubberized ropey stuff) they use on farm implement tires. Available at The Tractor Supply Company!
