I am restoring a 1927 1 ton truck engine. The crankshaft journals have been cleaned up. All of the babbitt bearings are in good shape but I noticed that one of the rod bearings has a hairline crack going between the oil journals, about 1/4". It is only in the babbitt material and does not go all the way to the edges. Do you think it would be acceptable to use?

Hi Scott, Assuming all the other characteristics are within specifications the rod can be re-used with complete confidence. You may find it interesting to go browse around HERE.

Thanks for the speedy response on re-using the cracked bearing. I read thru the posting you suggested on 'here' and it was very informative. I have had a local machine shop bore out the cylinders and purchased pistons from Egge. The machine shop cleaned up the crank. I had a spare rod to use just in case--but the babbitt bearing is not tight against the rod cap and was not sure if that would be acceptable or worse than using a bearing that is cracked. Is there a way of tightening down the bearing to the cap?

No, I would not recommend that. It should be repored as there is no way to insure a consistent clearance.
