I am trying to clean up and test my starter and generator on my 1931 Sedan. What is the best way to clean the electro magnets inside the housing? Can I use brake cleaner or will that destroy the insulation? Also, the Amature is very dirty. Same question.

Hi Ralph. Congrats on taking electrical item cleaning seriously. Dry cleaning fluid is the best , it doesnt damage paint or electrical windings. It dries quickly and has a huge affinity for grease and dirt. Second best is electrical safety solvent . Not as good but keeps some opinions happy.

It is best to use a solvent that dries without leaving a oily film.

Aerosol brake cleaner might be a good option. It cuts oils quickly and leaves no residue.

I used to race RC cars and we used an aerosol motor cleaner, Dynamite motor spray. It was great for getting all the dirt out of electrical motors and cleaning the com. Not sure what is in it. Had a few cans of Dynamite motor spray left and used that on my Generator. Below is a link to a newer version of what I have. For other electronics I have found that WD40 Electronic Contact Cleaner works well. I use that for dials, pots and switches. I have found that having an old car is a constant project that is never done. I think that is a good thing. Keeps me learning new things. Having two from different eras is just a form of higher education.

Thanks for the replies. I found a guy locally that repairs/rebuilds starters and generators so I will let him deal with it. I appreciate the comments.
