My resources list the 235 six and the 265 V8 as the only engines available for the 3100-3800 series in 1957. I see adds for 57 pickups with 283 engines. Was the 283 available late in the model year?

My experience is that the vast majority of people can't tell a 265 from a 283. They also don't know or remember that Chevrolet made a 265 so think all older V-8s are 283s. And since all but a few '57s had factory installed 283s that is what they think is under the hood.

In 1957 the 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton and 1 1/2 ton trucks used the 265 engine The 283 was not available.
The 265 they used actualy was the same block as the and the improved 283 block and even had the same casting numbers but was bored out to 3 3/4" instead of the larger 3 7/8'" bore of the 283; Due to the extra thick cylinder walls the 265 can easily be bored out to 3 7/8 and the larger pistons installed..................
In 1968 they all had the 307 engine....

In 1965 while attending a trade school one of the students was rebuilding a 265 for his '55 and I believe the final result was 301. I don't remember how much the cut was.

You can bore out the 1955 and 1956 engines to to 3 7/8" but the walls will be dangerously thin.

The 265 truck engines (1955, 1956 and 1957) had 140 horse power where as the 2 barrel cars engines had 162 HP.. Thw truck engines were detund for longer durability in pulling loads, etc.
The 1957 car ngine used in cas with a 2 barrel and standard transmission also kad a 265 engine.
