Hi,

I have a 1956 Bel air with a 6 cylinder and an automatic transmission.
My engine block # is 3837004 which I am told is a 1955-57 6 cylinder block.

The distributor that I have in the car is a Delco that is stamped 1112396-4H02

I was told on another website that it is the wrong distributor for my car and that the distributor I have is out of a 1954 6 cylinder automatic. I was also told it could do potential damage to the gears in my engine and that I needed a 1956-1962 Delco part# 1112 403 distributor instead.

When I called a well-known parts supplier, they told me that I currently have the proper distributor in my car, part# 1112396

Any thoughts?

.your block is for a 1956 or 1957....not a 1955.
The distributor you have is fine for your car , All 1954 Power Glide engines used a cast iron camshaft (early sticks had steel and late had castiron) so the distributor you have has a drive gear that is OK for you cast iron camshaft.

If you have the wrong combination the worst that could happen is after many, many miles the DISTRIBUTOR GEAR could wear out.
