What would be correct AC blue top plug number? What would VCCA judging accept? I think I am running No. 45.

The 1937 Service bulletion list a n AC K 11

The June 1938 Service Bulletion lists the K 11 boing replaced by an AC Blue Top 47. and is used for production and replacement.

The 1939 parts book lists only an AC Blue Top 44 and 45.

A #44 cold plug is recommended for high speed driving and a 45 for general use.

I realize the above does ot answer your judging question and adds more confusion.

The one time my 38 was judged they didn't look at the spark plugs.

For years they only checked to see if AC plugs were nstalled - or did not check the plugs. Depends on the human remembeing to do things I guess.

The likelihood that a judge would look to see what plugs you are using, or know what plug is correct for your car, is slim to none.

The C86 fits the early 6 cylinders and is what I have in my 32. I picked up a spare set at a flea market a few years ago -NOS in the box. Traded the vendor for a cup of coffee. He had set up early and was alone and not wanting to leave his site.

AC makes one replacement spark plug for general use and it is the AC R45.,
I have used the plug in my 1934,1939,1950 and 1957 with no problems.

I should add to my last post - all of my cars had preservation awards and never lost points in judging using those spark plugs

Hi Randy. The 103 is a 10mm plug, The 86 is a 18mm plug. I read somewhere i think it was Popular Mechanics that to check your plugs you should inspect one after a run. That has worked for me. If they are black you need a hotter heat range meaning one number higher on the AC scale. I agree with Gene. The 45 AC plug will burn clean on the engine in question. An AC 44 will burn black. The NGK B6S plug also burns clean in case you cannot get AC plugs. The NGK 6 heat range is very common on modern cars.

The AC 44 is not being made anymore.
It was the standard plug for 1953 and up 235 engines and V8 engines.

Actually the 1949-1953 216 came with an AC 46-5 and the 235 with a 44-5. These plugs were discontinued years ago.

I would agree with the idea that few VCCA judges will look to verify exactly what spark plugs you are running, OTHER THAN, most good judges will look to see if they are AC spark plugs. Most VCCA judges often will NOT look to see what number is on the spark plugs. Finding NOS AC Blue Tops for sale is very rare. I might have a couple of them, but I will have to check. I always ran AC #45 in my 1940 216.

I agree with Dave above. I have always used AC 45s with no comments from the judges. My '40 was judged about 10 times. The only comment ever was "ya got a rusty plug in there." Comment only, no points were deducted.

Over 30 years ago when I first started to restore my 1940 business coupe, I looked in the 1929-1940 Chevrolet Master Parts Price List - August 1, 1940 edition ( later to be known as the Chevrolet Master Parts Catalog ). My goal was and has been to restore my Chevrolets with factory correct NOS GM parts and often looking for correct date coding on parts. Before anyone says it, yes, I am nuts about originality.
In the 1929-1940 Chevrolet Master Parts List it says:
1933 -1940 Blue Top Spark Plugs #44 - fits all models
1933 -1940 Blue Top Spark Plugs #45 - fits all models
1933 -1938 Blue Top Spark Plugs #46 - fits all except CC , which is the1933 Passenger Standard

ps. I just found 6 NOS #44 Early style AC plugs ( NOT blue tops )
