I think it is a laugh to think about bailing out because of the economy. Just stop the project and wait for the economy to turn around. I went through three cycles in the economy with my 32 Roadster. It took 21 years but I made it. Just depends how bad you want it and your patience.

And you might be able to buy that car/truck you always wanted at a better price.

Only at $1625. Add some (many?) thousands of dollars and some blood, sweat, tears and you will have a '32 3 window coupe to show.

Roadster, your point is right on track with the positive reasons for being in this hobby. If you really like your project car and want to keep it, it doesn't matter what is going on with the outside world.
The other side of the spectrum (as mentioned in the article I was talking about) are the guys who jump in with the intent of creating a family heirloom (like an investment) or turning around a completed car that can command the prices they see posted "for sale". When the economy dips down, either prospect doesn't look that swell. The upfront cost and effort is still the same, however, so these are the guys who tend to bail out.

Economy is a big word for someone that lost their job and are supporting a bunch of kids that are eating the putty out of the windows, selling the hobby stuff always comes up, I hope they get decent prices for their favorite project. But for the grace of God, or the roll of the dice, it could be anyone.

Very true, the hobby car/truck is one of the first items to be sacrificed in hard times. I think a lot of us have been in that boat. Maybe this is why it takes some of us so long to 'finish' a project, I'm still working on one car I got in the late 70's. I guess if I keep it 'in process' it is too hard to show it to sell when it is in pieces.
Only with age do some of us get the time and money to work on the hobby; ie the kids are gone, retirement and have some good luck.

Up to $1700 and the reserve isn't met yet. Wonder what the owner thinks it is worth?

Geez, Gator - you found a good 'un here. I'm honestly tempted to copy them for my album of "before" pictures I had not taken the time to collect - it looks pretty much like how I started out...! Macky's point hits on the truth, although that could generally be extended to just about anything of value someone might have and would need to sell - a car, boat, motorcycle, furniture, etc. As I was referring to, the increase of basket cases for sale is driven in part by the shrinkage of both high demand and high selling prices out there for completed cars. In other words, the would-be restorer's intent was to make money or an investment, just like, say, buying gold, stocks, or real estate.

The paint number is not visible in that photo since it appears to be a light stamping and not a heavy stamping. :( :( :(

One of us has got to grab it! I like the idea of before referance pictures. It even has sticker tires with one sided white walls!

I took another look. Does anyone have an idea what color it was? The stamp is two numbers. It's got re-painted yellow wheels. Could that be Medium cream? I might be #92, because I think I see black around the cowl band, and maybe blue below the moulding. Although the door posts are black. This is interesting to me because I can't find any all black color with only two numbers. mmmmm.....

I emailed the seller and got this reply:
Hi,
Thank you for your interest in this car. The trim number is 16. The paint number is 89. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Jon Tucker 859-255-0040
And the colors are? Looks like all black, w/green,gold strips, maybe? The wire wheels I think are the wrong color, should be Ocean Green or Black? Maybe????
This is the best looking unrestored '32 car I have seen on ebay w/no reserve. Hope it gets bid out of my price range. Darn it, still at $2,050, come on guys get it out of my range, please.....my fingers are getting itchy....
Seller has an interesting car name, doesn't he.

Now how did I miss that. Goes to show ya that ya can't rely on 53 yr. old eyesight after 9pm. I guess I'm also partial to medium cream wheels. (only those are a little too primrose for me). Hey Gator try telling your wife you're thinking of going into the taxi business!

The 32 3 window basket case was advertised here in San Diego, in the local paper for $3500.00 no takers. The car is a shell trunk floor is gone no glass, no wood, no seats no, no transmission, and the motor is frozen and apart. But a project car it is.

It's interesting to note that they have a standard 5W coupe valued more than a sport coupe with a rumble seat and a coach valued more than a sedan, but valued the same as the much rarer 3W coupe. Also, notice that the more desirable 5 passenger coupe (Vicky) is valued the same as the 5W standard coupe. What's wrong with this total picture?
