I would like to change the transmission in either my 33 master coupe or my 35 coupe so that I can travel on the highways and keep up.
Has anyone done this?

You will have to change the transmission to one with overdrive as all stock transmissions of that period are 1:1 in high gear. The modern T-5 has been used by several but requires some specific machine work to make adapters, etc.

Welcome to VCCA Chat. I suggest you do some searches here to get the full picture about making these classic cars drive faster.

Chipper is correct that if you are only going to change the transmission you need to install one with overdriven gears. The alternative is to install a lower numerical ratio differential.

Either one is not a simple parts and components swap in the 2 vehicles you mention.

The bigger picture is to consider if the whole chassis is capable of safely operating at interstate highway speeds. Consider the steering, wheels & tires, and especially the brakes.

One other factor to consider is whether your top speed will actually be any higher even with the gearing change. The engine only produces so much torque at a given speed. When the horsepower required to drive the car at higher speed is less than what the engine will produce at that speed you will not go any faster.

I have owed multiple cars with 5 speed overdriven transmissions. In most of them the top speed was in 4th gear, not 5th.

In stock configuration your car should be able to cruise at 50-55 mph.

In this state the interstate traffic moves at 75 MPH or more so at 60-65 you will still be a turtle.

Slow down... enjoy a slower, more sane way of Life..... and really experience what life was like in the 1930's...... give yourself more time to drive where you want to go.... using the secondary back roads ... where the speed limit is 25-50 mph.....
Much easier than trying to redesign your car to keep up with this insane fast paced lifestyle...
