It is getting more and more difficult to paint, there are too many options and choices out there. I need it SIMPLE.
Some people need to reccomend a "paint system" (name brand) that they have had good luck with and I will get their paint manuel and follow their directions one little step at a time.

Hi Gator. We DO have it down to a simple step-by-step process, but we need to write it down. I'm sure you could take it and run with it, but it will require a lot of specialized tools and materials...
We could simplify it down to a more practical approach for the typical handyman-home-owner-in-a-garage approach. There are a lot of good materials available in hobby stores and home improvement stores that will give really good results.
You just made me think, I should do a side-by-side comparison like bowtieollie did, only with wheels!

I've gone 2 routes lately with wheels. Both started with sandblasting and thorough cleaning, degreasing. First way used 2 coats PPG epoxy primer followed by 1 tack and 2 coats Concept single stage urethane. Very nice gloss that has held up well. Second route I used just to spruce up my 50 driver a little. After blasting used good old Rust-O-leum Bare Metal primer.Applied a couple of coats, sanded with 80 grit, couple more coats, sanded with 220,couple more coats, wet sanded with 400. Then sprayed on 3 coats of Rust-O-Leum color. Was over a year ago and still looks nice, has held up well. Best part is all paint, sandpaper, etc.cost less than $25.00.

Now that is even better if it can be simple and cheap.
Could it be possible??

gator, yes, I think that it's possible...brjr51 outlines two different processes which will deliver two different coatings...so long as one has the proper expectations, I imagine that each has its utility... thanks brjr51...I may try your suggestion for our driver...if it doesn't hold up for more than a couple of years, I haven't lost much...I can then apply a tougher finish at that time...at any rate, it sounds like it would be easier to retouch, as necessary... epi

I was real happy with the Rust-Oleum. Turned out better than I expected.Probably looks more original too than that dipped in plastic, super shiny urethane. Took less than a quart each of primer and color to do 5 wheels(at about $6 a quart at Menards.)Thinned with cheap store brand mineral spirits.
