Greetings, I purchased a 'basket case" 1936 Chevy 1/2 ton low cab truck. I have several pieces with casting numbers that I was hoping someone might be able to share if they are year correct. Bellhousing: GM 839257 Clutch fork: 838711 Flywheel: 838663 Thank you kindly for any information.

839257 is for 1938-11947 truck There are four different fly wheels with the 838663 number. Differnt is various different pressure plate holes and clutch sizes and timing marks Geneally fit 1938-1940 trucks.

Thank you for that information! It is my understanding that the previous owner was attempting to change the clutch/throw out bearing/fork to a newer model, in order to replace the carbon fiber bearing as well as the difficult to find clutch.. He had an additional bellhousing in the mix, #838533. I have been looking at so many casting numbers, I am a bit confused. I believe what I need is the GM 839257 Bellhousing. Would you have a recommendation as to where I may purchase one? . Again, thanks for your prompt reply.

Are you wanting to get everything back to correct 1936 configuration?

Not to the purist. I have a 1937 216cc engine. I would like to change to Bellhousing and clutch to a 1938-47, so that parts would be more readily available. This is my first attempt at a frame off restoration. I am definitely a novice/hobbyist. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the response.

JL40, just north of you in Palm Harbor, I have a 1936 GMC, different engine but most everything else translates to Chevy, any way I can help let me know.

I think you will need to modify the crossmember under the back of your engine. I'm not sure what the change is. If you are using your '36 transmission, the front bearing retainer will need to be swapped out with later one.

Thank you for the kind offer dunfire! I am a bit of a novice and this is my first attempt at a frame off restoration. I also recently purchased an original 1936 Chevy 1 1/2 ton tanker truck. So, my wife says a have a problem, and I have to agree! Joe

Joe, I hesitate to tell you but you might have at least two problems. The truck might be the easiest to handle. Time and success with the first one can be a pleasant solution to other problem.

The truck will definitely be your easiest problem to sort out and you will enjoy the benefits for years to come. Tony

Joe, I also have a 1936 1-1/2 ton truck. There is a lengthy thread about it in the trucks section, here on chat. Look for 1936 Low Roof Semi Truck in the title. I have gained a little truck knowledge along the way. Feel free to PM, direct email, or call me at 573 864 6539. My friend, Roger, used to call me at work (I was the boss). He would always ask if he had called at a good time. My standard reply was "It's always a good time to talk about old Chevy trucks"
