Appears to be some HEAVY tan colored grease packed in this funnel shaped port on the side? I assume for lubrication, is this the recommended method and type of grease for the lubrication of the shaft?
Also... there is a large 1 1/4" nut that I have loosened completely,,,yet nothing comes apart? what is the purpose of this nut?
The nut is the packing nut for the packing or seal that stops the water from leaking out of the pump. It needs to be tightened up until it doesn't leak, but no more. You may need a new packing though to do the job.
The grease cup should be filled with the proper grease as linked to above, and then turned down until you feel it pushing grease into the bearing in the water pump.
agree, grease cup (missing cap in picture) filled with correct water pump grease, turn routinely to put grease into pump/shaft per instruction in manual and packing nut. (put in new packing) tighten per manual instructions, should be a drip every so often, and shaft should turn freely, to tight and will burn up packing & pump.
here is a picture of the grease cup w/ cap off my 1929 water pump
lot of this is in the Owners Manual and Repair Manual !! great resources with pictures and instructions. plus everyone here to help as well !!
