[font:Arial][size:14pt]I've been striking out trying to find a new axle for my car. Chevs of the 40's, Speedway Motors, Summit Racing, I and I Reproductions, the Filling Station, Vintage Chevys NOS, nobody I talked to has anything.

My body shop said it would be fine to lower the front 2 inches but I have drum brakes and I'm keeping my car all stock as much as possible. Does anyone have another lede?

And why do you need a new axle?

Here's a copy of my FB post the day I wrecked my car. I had just had a complete brake job, new lines, NOS master cylinder that no one bothered to look if the seals were ok:

I was going to go to Costco this morning, but first I had a quick stop at Kinko's. When I got to R St on 5th, there was a queue of 4 or 5 cars at the light, I shifted into 2nd gear, pumped my brake and I suddenly couldn't slow down, couldn't stop, I didn't have any brakes(!!) I looked at the space between the cars and the curb (too narrow) and there was busy cross traffic, I was still going too fast--so I jumped the curb and headed for something that would stop me. In this case a concrete block hotel and a light post! The whole incident lasted less than 6 seconds. Don't worry, I'm uninjured even though it looks like I could have been kilt!
No peddle. The brake fluid was topped off and clean but the brake master cylinder test-Flunked, zero pressure.

Thanks, I'm going to do exactly the same thing. Gave Sid my deposit yesterday.

Sounds like you were lucky not to be injured in that accident! Wow. Does the Emergency brake / Parking brake work? It's mechanical so works independent of the hydraulic system so can be a great backup if it is set up properly.

My parking brake is a bit of a reach for me. I actually didn't even think of it as I had less than 6 seconds between shifting into 2nd gear and running into the building.

Sorry to hear of your accident. If you are trying to keep the car original, why would you want to lower the front 2 inches? If you want a stock axle I would watch for street rodders, they frequently have used stock parts for sale.

Thanks for your input. My body man said it would be good to lower the front especially since my front end is higher than the rear, now. I think we'll like the look. I could have straightened the axle for not very much but my insurance will pay for a replacement.

Hmm, If your front end is higher than the back, I would suspect that either the back is sagging or the front has been raised up by adding springs. The stock 37 Chevrolets I have seen sit pretty level including my stock 37 Master Sport sedan. If you want it stock, I would investigate why it is higher in the front. Best wishes in what you decide to do.

For some reason, one of the rear leaf springs has been replaced. I'm really happy with the way my car is coming together. It's just hard to wait!
