I'm considering converting my 1954 Bel Air from 6 volt to 12 volt, but wondering if that will result in a deduction in scoring.

In my case, to help with hard starting. From Filling Station: "The main reason for the change to 12 volt was the increase in horsepower and compression ratios that caused hard starting. In Chevrolets, this began in 1953 with the increased compression ratios. When the engine was hot you would sometimes have trouble starting the car as 6 volt systems lacked the cranking power needed for the additional compression."

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. If you have a '54 four field coil starter and other components are in good condition it will start even when hot. The two coil starter will work but sometimes in very hot weather will be slower spinning.

Incorrect sized and and bad battery cables will lead to starting issues.

i switch to 12 volt for brighter lights, ease in finding replacement bulbs, and i'm able to run a hidden modern stereo and amplipher, and speakers.
