When working on your charging system, when you replace and tension the belt, make sure it didn't slip off of the crank pulley before tightening it and starting the car. Don't ask me how I figured that out.....

School of hard knocks. Hopefully the belt survived for the second attempt.
On one timing belt I did years ago I forgot the large ratchet on the end of the crankshaft that I used to turn the engine over. Started it up, heard a clang and then racket so shut it off. Spun the bolt off the crank, the pulleys all went flying and the new belt and pulleys were strewn everywhere. Didn't lose or damage anything but I'm extra careful now.

The belt survived but it's a 3/8 belt now instead of 7/16. I stopped at the parts store and picked up a spare just in case.

Did the same thing last year with my mower belt. Decided to start the year with a new belt and shredded it within 10 seconds. Installed the old one and got a NEW one for a spare.

Too many belt, pulley, front accessory drive stories than I would like to admit!
Wiped out 2 serpentine belts when I incorrectly tightened a plastic idler pulley and cracked it on the front end of a BMW 540i. Not cheap parts and took a couple of days to get them.
We forgot to remove the ratchet on the crack pulley on the Miata before we started a 20 minute on track session. We saw it hanging down at the end of the first lap. It was not visible at the end of the second lap so we assumed it had fallen off somewhere during that lap. At the end of the session we found it lying in the plastic under-tray.
Another time we did a quick water pump replacement between track sessions and forgot to do a final tighten of the 4 6 mm capscrews that held the pump drive pulley to the flange on the pump shaft. We made it through the session OK but it sure was noisy when he came into the pits. And it definitely messed up the holes in the pulley!
How can such simple drives have so many "gotcha's"?
