Just came across a NOS battery for my 1960 Corvair (original un-restored car). Still in the box, never used. Anyone know if (A) it can be rebuilt and (B) who does this service? It is a Delco 557A. Will be used mostly for display for that added ambiance, but still need car to start and move. Corvair Ed Dade City Fl VCCA#47508 TA#99

If it were me I would drive the car to the display area and switch batteries after arrival. Keeping the original battery in unmolested condition trumps modifying to get it to function.

Is 557A a dry charge battery or did it come wet and ready to go ? If dry charge couldn't he just put some battery acid in it ( assuming he a facility somewhere close that would sell him acid or better yet put it in for him) ? If it came wet what is going to hurt to see if it will hold a charge. If, not dump the acid and make it lighter to handle.

It's a dry charge battery still in the original box, never installed. When I get it I'll determine what I want to do with it. Thanks for the suggestions. Corvair Ed VCCA#47508

Delco sealed the later dry charged batteries with a hard wax like substance. You would use the Delco Eye battery cap to knock it out and fill with electrolyte. Is your battery sealed at the vent caps or is it open? If open, the plates have been exposed to humidity for 50+ years and your chances of getting it charged up are slim. If sealed it would be interesting to see what would happen but Chippers advice sounds best.
Let us know how it works out.
