Is there an equivalent to the 600 weight gear oil that is safe and any one is using in their trans and rear ends that can be picked up at local parts stores ? Or would I be better off sending off for the VT-40 from Filling station.
Thanks fellas.. - Van

Just go to your parts store and get some 90/140 W gear oil.

GL4 is SAFER for Yellow metals vs GL5 which is high in sulfer? Which eat at yellow metals

don't want it to eat away at your bushings :)

Hello,
My 1930 Chevrolet needs gearbox oil too. As i am in Belgium, I can't buy it from the Filling Station.
I read the 600W is equivallent to the SAE 160 but I only find 140.
Examples:
- Duckhams hypoid 85 W 140 gl-5 CLASSIC MOTOR OIL (Duckhams)
- Lucas gear oil SAE 85 W 140

Do you think it will fit ?

Thank you

The original grade of oil for the gearbox & diff was 600W Super Cylinder oil, which may still be made by Mobil, and is used to lubricate parts on steam trains.

Thank you I think I found this Mobil 600W Super Cylinder oil.
This oil must be very viscous, how do you fill it in the gearbox ? a pump ?

Thank you

i remove the top plate with shift rod and pour in till it reaches fill port on side. i remove the fill port plug so when it starts to come out i know it is full.
or you can pour it in slowly with a smaller bottle with a tip on it. like below and fill through side fill port.

The Mobil Super Cylinder Oil is a straight mineral oil without any extreme pressure additives(EP).Its viscosity originally equalled an SAE 160 modern grade, but today it's equal to an SAE 140 grade. It was also specified to be used on the "Tryon" spring shackle pins & plates and possibly the king pin bushes as well, but others may have more knowledge than me about that.It was specified to be used in the shackle pins, kingpins, diff saddles, steering box etc as far back as 1927(according to my '27/'28 lubrication carts).
I mix a small amount of Castrol semi fluid grease & this oil together for the Jacox screw & split nut steering box in my '29 Olds,as it uses 2 bronze half nuts, which would have the zinc content leached out of them if I used a modern EP heavy gearoil.I put it in a plastic squirt bottle(similar to what BearsFan315 uses)and microwave it in 30sec bursts til it's nice & runny, then squirt it in.

I made an oil spout with a 90 degree angle that I use to pour the 600W oil into the tranny. I lift up the floorboards, take out the fill plug, put my spout in and just pour it in from above. When oil starts leaking out the side of the fill hole, it is full. ;-)

Cheers, Dean
