Since I am having borderline cooling system issues it may be wise to replace my non-leaking water pump at this time on my 216 engine... Other than the markings W 2414-2 on the shaft and the numbers 5 64 (Date?) on either side of the pulley I cannot find any casting numbers on it. Also do not know if it has a single hole or 2 holes in the back...
Would someone please help identify this pump or know the original GM part number, could it be GM 839403? Thank you.

The numbers indicate it is a replacement water pump. The 1937-1940 water pumps have one hole on the back. The pulley is different on the 1937-1938 water pumps. Overheating is usually caused by a plugged-up radiator core and almost never the water pump.

Can the back plate and the pulley be switched out on newer style pump to work on the 1937-1938?
Philipj, what cooling problems are you seeing? Plugged up radiator cores and rust chunks in the block can cause problems as Gene said. These engines can run on the hotter side when operating normally. It is also common for the rad to be overfilled and it will spit out coolant just after you shut it off. The rad should be filled just to the top of the cores if you look inside. Don't fill it to the top of rad.

The 1937-1940 has one 1 5/16" hole on the back of te water pump and front of the block. The 1941 and up has two 1" holes. on the back of the pump and front of the block.
The 1937-1940 engines tended to run hotter under adverse conditins and thus the cooling improvements were made in 1941.
Block rust transfering from the block to the fine tubes in the radiator core causes most over heating problems and both the block and the core requires cleaning to cure the problem.
