Hi T-RUCK,

Suggest you take a look here for an explanation of what is done and why. Rocker Arm Grinding Follow the discussion until you find the part on rocker arms.

It is extremely important that this procedure be done if there is any wear to the face of the rocker arm that comes in contact with the end of the valve stem.

To do the job correctly it must be done on a valve grinding machine. This insures that the curvature is correct.

Your local machine shop will know what to do and can assist you.

Everyone that I know of that does this operation do it at home on a fine stone on the bench grinder, practice wuth a couple of really bad ones then do the ones on your engine, you won't have to look at them to see if grinding is needed they will chew up your feeler gage when you try to set the gap with the engine warm and at a idle.
If you really look new old stock rockers are available, those that are worn as bad as Rays probably are worn on the shaft bearing area also. Usually a new shaft (or rotate the old one) will fix that problem,it really isn't much of a problem since the rocker just moves a few degrees.

After I thunk about it, most of the rocker shafts and rocker arms I have salvaged from 216 and 235 engines weren't worn in the shaft bearing area, in fact most of them were barely movable due to crud build up on the shafts and arms.

Thanks to all for replies.
Antique Mechanic SIR I have read your[ Schools in session] spelling==== And im inpressed,[ my eyeballs need to be replaced ],but impressed nun the less. WELL DONE and a pleasure to read.
WELL back to rocker arms, After reading all posts it sounds like i have a choice, 1. SPEND$$$$$. OR 2. BE CREATIVE. Well sence money is not a problem  YEA RIGHT. I pic door #2. BUT FIRST let me make sure ive got this right.
1. removeing material from the tip of rocker must be kept to a minimum.
2 the tip of the rocker MUST sit flat on the valve stem. in same plain as rocker shaft.
3.THE CURVE OF THE TIP SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED.
4.WHEN IN OPERATION, the tip of the rocker should move across the center line valve stem tip, this should minamise guide wear and give max valve lift.
well i guess im going to build some type jig to do this with. if i left anything out let me know,
