I have been using detergent oil in everything for 58 years with almost no engine failures (57 Desoto broke a crankshaft at high miles) I don't flush the crankcase and have used 10-30 oil since 1970 or before in my old Chevrolets with no problems!

I have an antique car and truck. Both are 1936. I use only NOS parts, or if I have to, reproduced parts, that are as close to original as I can get. Keeping my vehicles as close to 'original' as possible is my goal. I even use 'antique' oil and clean out procedures just like as if I was back in the day. I want it to run antique, look antique, and smell antique. Ever smell an engine just cleaned with kerosene while motoring down the road? Or added during the Winter time just like the book says to do? It is not just the rebuilding, painting, and fabric. It is the realness that I am after. That real time on the road with the feel of the steering wheel in my hand, wind in your face, and the smells of the era that I am after.

I would not run the engine long with kerosene in the oil as kero is an abrasive not a lubricant.

Terrill,

We are kindred spirits as to keeping our cars as original as proctical or possible but I draw the line at messing with kerosene just for the smell.

Nonetheless, I salute you for whatever you do in holding to the club's original intent: Preservationn and restoration. I wish more members did. dance

Best regards,

Charlie computer

BTW: I may have an old mechanical part or two lying around. If you ever need something, let me know and I'll take a look. Will too! (I think I came across a WP in the last couple day.)

The oil/kerosene mix is used only for 3 to 5 minutes to clean while run at idle. Then drained and re-filled with the proper oil. The smell also comes from the gasoline mix this time of the year.
