I believe I have a thermostat housing that I would part with. I’ll locate it and post some pictures to see if it is correct.

I think a 160 degree stat should be available from many local sources as they fit many years of Chevy and other cars. I would not use a thermostat any higher unless you are going to run it in the Canadian Winter weather.

The 140 thermostat is available and is the one I use in my 29. I wanted one to stabilize the temperature for valve lash consistency during cool days. The last time I bought one it was $14.00, and I believe it only comes in SS. I drill 2, or 3 1/16" holes through it to make sure it does not have an air pocket under it and so it is actually sensing the circulating water temperature. 160 degree should be fine and will do the same thing.

So I am still in the dark about the bypass valve. What is it and what does it do? Is it required or can I just block that hole, install the thermostat and drive on?

"Go back and read page one of the September, 1931 issue of the Chevrolet Service News. It explains in detail what the by-pass valve does."
Found it - thanks. So is it like a back-check valve with a flapper or is it spring loaded?
